| Why US Schools don't teach steel rolling process? Steel rolling process is one of the key areas in the steel manufacturing. Unfortunately, no US school teaches steel rolling process. Few schools, such as University of Pittsburgh and Colorado School of Mines, have about two hours of coverage on the basics of the steel rolling process. In comparison, countries like China, Japan, Germany, Rusia and Sweden, have this type of major (called Metal Forming or similar) and so, students go through B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. on steel rolling. The author has been in the US steel industry for over 10 years, but up to now the author has seen very few people who understand basics on steel rolling processes such as the mechanical and metallurgical interaction on the roll separating force, metal flow (spread, forward slip), tension effect, friction and so on. The knowledge on the steel rolling process is of great significance, so for example, the 1% reduction on the roll force prediction error means 1 to 2 million dollars per year for most plate/strip mills, considering the equipment utilization, product quality, and costs of material, energy and operation, etc. I agree that US steel industry does pretty good job in process automation and product development, etc. However, the steel rolling process is its obvious weakness.
